2020 Oscar-race reviews: an introduction

Nominations are out for this year’s Academy Awards and it’s that time of the year when a-movie-a-week turns into a-couple-of-movies-every-couple-of-days.
Thanks to the streaming gods, this year has been a lot easier to catch up on several films even before the nominations were announced. I have to start saying that, with a few exceptions, I found this year’s nominees to be quite underwhelming. In a year where amazingly original films were released (Uncut Gems, The Farewell, Us, Midsommar, just to name a few), where a great number of women stood out behind the lens, where actors and actresses of color gave some of their best performances ever, the Academy found itself once again relying on tradition, honoring the same names we’ve been hearing for decades now. With this in mind, I will be reviewing all of the nominees for Best Picture, as well as other films belonging to different categories, and I will also include reviews on what I consider to be some of the biggest snubs in the last years. So, without further ado, here comes my yearly tradition of Oscar race reviews…
